SWEET CORN

It is almost time for sweetcorn picking. K. starts planting it in the spring and plants about every 10-14 days to stagger the picking so that we can have corn for the stores and farmer's market for several weeks. Unlike field corn where you harvest all at once sweetcorn on our farm is hand picked and the field is walk through 2-3 times so that only the ears that is ready is picked.
The pictures posted show sweet corn fields being irrigated, staggered plantings and the one in the shed is a few years old but it shows the bins of corn the hold 50 dozen. This is the way it usually goes to the store. It is picked into the bins and then brought to the shed and ice is put over the corn and then placed in the cooler. This helps take the heat out of the corn and keeps it fresh longer. I hope we have few ears that we can have soon for our meals. The crops are late this year do to the rain and cool night and day temps.

Hi, Janna -
I don't think I know you (or do I?) but I started following your blog when links came to mine from yours. I'm loving the peeks into your farm life... looks very busy. I'll have fun reading about your family and seeing your pictures.

Thanx for posting a comment....I do not know you but think we have the same cousins as you (or your husband and I do). I love Q & L as if they were our g'parents too. Still see them in their home and L.always made you feel special with her smile and called us by our name. Loved what you did with her hankies.
