Wooden Shoes, were woren by the dutch for practical purposes. The country is damp, marshy land and below sea level making it impractical for farmers to wear leather shoes. The shoes are made from poplar or willow trees that are plentiful in Holland.
Isaac has been wanting to buy wooden shoes, he grabbed two twenties before we left for the Tulip Festival because thats what he's gonna buy.
Only one place in Orange City sold them,
a little more expensive than we thought but....Isaac's ♥ was set on them.
Isaac: "if you were me would you get them?"
"I'm not you, do want them?"
"no, if you were me would you buy them"
"I got some when I was little & I am glad I have them"
On the way home we visited Grandpa and Grandma.
"can I wear them in the nursing home"
The evening was a sweet one of sharing about our day with the residence, learning a little about their lives. One lady came from Holland when she was 7 after WW I, from the same province as my dad, Laura shared the pix off my camera with G'ma and soon several others wanted to see them too, so the kids took turns sitting next to the residence to view pix on the small screen, more stories were shared.
Think I fell in love with my kids all over again.
I love the elderly but what a joy to watch the kids interact with them. Cannot put a price on those wooden shoes after seeing the joy my son and the elderly had with the shared evening.
(Sunday AM, "my cowboy boots are getting too small", me: "no you are not wearing the wooden shoes")
